Wellness Wednesday: Pillars of Brain Health – Part One

Sleep and Relaxation

Sleep energizes and improves mood, as well as bolsters the immune system. REM sleep or “dream sleep” is particularly important for healthy cognitive function. This part of sleep is where you have vivid dreams and is believed to be associated with learning, memory and mood. Lack of REM sleep has been associated with being overweight, reduced coping skills and even migraines.

To improve the quality of your sleep, establish bedtime routines and address any medical conditions like snoring and sleep apnea. One in three Americans fall short of the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night.  Inadequate sleep contributes to the risk of dangerous chronic health conditions like heart disease, depression, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

Relaxation: the ability to decompress and relax is associated with stress reduction and improved resiliency, the ability to bounce back after difficult circumstances. One way to help reduce stress is by practicing meditation. Research has shown that meditation can improve brain health and ward off age related cognitive decline.
